Isaiah 9:6 “For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.”
This is another of Isaiah’s prophecies of the coming of Messiah – Jesus, the Christ.
A little in this verse, and extensively in the next verse, he speaks of Jesus’ reign on the earth as king. But here he speaks first of His incarnation and also of His names.
He will be Wonderful for who He is – and what He will do. He is no doubt our Counsellor – the One who will advise with authority on truth.
And in case there were any doubt, He will be the mighty God. Jesus’ deity is affirmed in this.
Present in eternity past, He is also everlasting Father. And as all who have faith in Him experience with joy, He is our Prince of Peace.
We look forward, with anticipation, to the time when the responsibility for governing will rest fully on Him.
