Proverbs 1:5 “A wise man will hear, and will increase learning; and a man of understanding shall attain unto wise counsels:”
The first thing the wise man does is simply hear. This may be our biggest challenge.
If reproof or correction comes, we often begin to formulate an argument in defense, instead of listening.
Our chief concern ought to be learning, determining our weakness (big or small), and correcting it for God’s glory.
Honest criticisms that challenge our thinking or question our actions are always helpful.
To “attain unto” means to acquire or obtain. We must seek out wise people and take wise advice; in general principle or personal application.
We stop, listen, and be patient to hear everything that is said or implied.
Certainly we must filter all advice. The word of God will be our guide and the people of God will be our source.
Still, truth, especially if it is truth about us, is revealed in unusual ways.
God uses uncomfortable moments and unpleasant people to teach as well.
Test the teaching, but be sure to hear and eager to learn, desiring to understand.
