Proverbs 28:7 “Whoso keepeth the law is a wise son: but he that is a companion of riotous men shameth his father.”
Parents want their children to be people of character. Believing parents want them to have respect for God and His law.
When they do, obeying it, they can be regarded as wise children.
This is not just because they have pleased their parents. Their obedience pleased God. And He is the One to which they are ultimately responsible.
But children can do something else that is a shame to parents: have the wrong friends.
Parents say it all the time. And what they say is consistent with scripture: “show me your friends and I’ll show you your future.”
The son in this text is a companion of “riotous men.” These are people without self control. They could be regarded as loose morally.
Anyone that keeps company with this type of a person is influenced. Soon, they are lacking self control themselves.
Children of any age should be concerned about our own character and our own fidelity to God’s commands. And we should pay very careful attention to the morality of our companions.
This is wise. Doing the opposite is shameful.
