Genesis 4:8 “And Cain talked with Abel his brother: and it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and slew him.”
There is much about this narrative we don’t understand; much we don’t know.
What exactly were Cain and Abel told about sacrifices? Was it passed down from their parents or did God tell them directly?
It is clear they had knowledge. They both must have known how to be obedient.
It is also clear that Cain was very angry when his sacrifice was not accepted.
That leads us to this verse. The details that are unclear do not change its impact.
Whatever combination of anger, jealousy, and hate that led to this murder should be a warning to us.
If we refuse to worship God in the way He commands, blaming Him and others for our failures, and let sin rule us, we are in trouble.
It is not out of the question that we may also resort to violence.
Remember, there is no end to sin’s potential for destroying us. This is why we must turn to and please Him.
