Job 33:9-10 “I am clean without transgression, I am innocent; neither is there iniquity in me. Behold, he findeth occasions against me, he counteth me for his enemy,”
Elihu explains what Job has been saying about himself in the first verse here. “I am clean. I am innocent. I have no iniquity.”
But Elihu sees iniquity within himself, even though he endeavors to follow God.
His evaluation is more realistic than Job’s. Our sinfulness, apart from Christ alone, makes us His enemy.
Job has taken the idea of his uprightness too far. And Elihu contends, as the chapter continues, that Job is demanding answers of God.
But this is not right, because God is greater and higher than man.
Job has maintained his integrity, but pride in that integrity has taken him off course.
In his haste to answer the unfounded accusations of his friends, he has forgotten he is just a man. And as a man, he has numerous and undeniable flaws.
He has no right to demand anything from God or to show him anything but reverence.
