Proverbs 4:23 “Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.”
This passage goes on to describe some ways in which we can accomplish this commandment.
The ear and the eye are portrayed as the gateways to the heart.
We understand this, and therefore avoid the seeing and hearing of all manner of corrupt communication.
Or do we?
We know this principle, we declare its benefits, we tell children and teens how important it is, but do we really prove our belief by action?
Or do we often think we can handle a little worldliness, semi-often and not be affected. This is a dangerous proposition.
Prolonged exposure to sinful images, flawed philosophies, and degrading words can have a cumulative, eroding influence.
We must keep, guard, shield, and otherwise protect our hearts!
Entertainment presents us with opportunities to test these barriers every day.
It is not the outrageously evil that will tempt us. The subtle, mostly-acceptable media draws our attention instead.
Therefore, let us protect our eyes and ears in an ever-more discerning way, knowing that which enters, makes its way to our hearts.
