Exodus 32:1 “And when the people saw that Moses delayed to come down out of the mount, the people gathered themselves together unto Aaron, and said unto him, Up, make us gods, which shall go before us; for as for this Moses, the man that brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we wot not what is become of him.”
The people of Israel were primarily showing a lack of faith in God by issuing this request, however several other sinful characteristics show through in the verse.
How many times have we at least considered turning to other sources of “blessing” when God has delayed?
The people, in their impatience, jump to the conclusion 1) that God has abandoned them and 2) that new gods would provide better leadership.
They also make the false assertion that Moses, not God, led them out of Egypt. Had they not internalized the constant refrain: “the Lord thy God, which brought thee up out of the land Egypt?”
It is clear that these sinful thought patterns had not come upon them suddenly. This episode was a revelation of their heart attitude and true belief.
