Genesis 9:12-13 “And God said, This is the token of the covenant which I make between me and you and every living creature that is with you, for perpetual generations: I do set my bow in the cloud, and it shall be for a token of a covenant between me and the earth.”
God does not always leave us with a reminder of His promises in nature, but in this case He has. He will never again judge the earth by flood and He wants us to remember this when we see His bow in the clouds.
In many ways, this symbol reminds us of the earth before the flood, full of violence and evil. It also reminds us of its judgement. But perhaps more than anything it reminds us of the grace Noah found and the deliverance he received.
Perhaps this rainbow should bring to mind grief over sin, thankfulness for grace, and joy for salvation? We are a blessed people. Praise God for this symbol of that blessing!
