Genesis 6:5 “And GOD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.”

Can it really be that man’s heart was turned to “only evil continually?”
This portion of the verse is shocking, because it so thoroughly excludes all good.
Men were apparently dwelling on evil and plotting evil things continuously.
A few verses later we see the results of this thinking, as the Bible tells us the earth was “filled with violence.”
The thoughts of men’s hearts were doing what they always do: becoming actions.
We realize two things based on this text: 1) man’s degradation apart from God knows no limits, and 2) the mercy of God is great.
How many opportunities must these people have had to turn back to their creator and away from their sin?
Their downward spiral had taken many years, and God, in His always-consistent merciful kindness had observed it all.
The judgement that was coming makes logical sense in light of the evidence here. It is the abundant mercy of God that still mystifies.
