This chapter provides a list of names and locations. It tells us which portions of Jerusalem’s wall are being repaired and which people are responsible for doing it.
It’s an easy passage to skip. The names are difficult to pronounce and the locations are hard to visualize, unless you have a good map from that era.
An online search provides a few resources, but we’ll have to do some digging to answer key questions.
One thing is abundantly clear: Nehemiah has a plan. He has organized the people and given them each a specific task.
Considering the long-standing opposition to this rebuild, strategic considerations have been made.
In these verses near the end of the chapter, we find people repairing sections of wall that are right in front of their houses.
We don’t have people traveling around the city or meeting in groups. They mind the work in their immediate area.
This provides a human perimeter, where God’s people can remain alert, and in familiar surroundings.
When trouble comes in the following chapter, the people already understand their assignments. And the work can go on, even as they prepare to defend themselves.
