Proverbs 28:19 “He that tilleth his land shall have plenty of bread: but he that followeth after vain persons shall have poverty enough.”
There are plenty of Proverbs that tell us hard work, generally speaking, leads to material benefit.
There are probably just as many Proverbs that tell us following after worthless things, not working hard, leads to poverty.
If this is a well-know, fairly non-controversial assertion, why do certain people fail to understand it?
That is, what motivates one person to work hard, while another one follows after the vain and empty?
Perhaps it is because one man feels the burden of responsibility, to God, and to His family. This means setting aside his own comfort and leisure, for someone else’s sake.
The other man may think only of himself. Forgetting his responsibility to God and to others. He satisfies his flesh with vain things for a moment, but suffers the long-term consequences.
For whom must we labor? And are we doing that which is necessary, despite how hard it may be, to be faithful and productive?
Our answer may decide whether we have plenty or poverty.
