The word of the Lord comes to Jonah in the first two verses of this book. He is told to arise and to go to Nineveh.

His job when he gets there is to call out against the city, for their evil has come up before the Lord.

Obviously, Jonah does something else. In fact, he goes the opposite direction.

He is attempting the impossible: to flee from the presence of the Lord.

This is bold and direct disobedience. And we’ll soon find out what his consequences look like.

We have some clues about exactly why he did this, but the reason doesn’t really matter.

When the Lord calls, the duty of his children is to respond in obedience. He knows what is best.

Our best outcome will always be doing His will without delay.
