Nahum 1:7 “The LORD is good, a strong hold in the day of trouble; and he knoweth them that trust in him.”
The previous verse speaks of the indignation and the anger of the Lord against Nineveh. It says His fury is “poured out like fire.”
Phrases like these are sometimes used to question the character of God.
But this verse is clear: the Lord is good.
Only a good God would act in judgement toward those who are His adversaries. Toward those who carry out significant and prolonged evil.
Goodness demands that He act against them – for the sake of justice and for the sake many others He protects. Those who look to Him as their strong hold in trouble.
God knows the people who trust in Him. And the He knows the people who don’t. He acts with absolute and perfect precision in His vengeance.
To know God when trouble comes is to have a divine protector. But to be His enemy at that time is to be exposed and without protection.
I wonder if we are consistently trusting this good God? Because our days are filled with trouble. And He is our only hope.
