Psalm 101:3-4 “I will set no wicked thing before mine eyes: I hate the work of them that turn aside; it shall not cleave to me. A froward heart shall depart from me: I will not know a wicked person.”
This passage deals with the most personal side of sin. Here David admits that it can get an emotional hold on us, yet makes a decision not to let that happen.
Two points are of particular interest; first his commitment regarding the eyes, and second his relationship with wicked people.
The eyes are a particular area of weakness for men. We should remember that what we see stays in our mind, and makes its way to our hearts. Therefore the casting of one’s gaze upon sinful things presents an opportunity for the enemy to gain a firm grasp.
Attachment to an evil person can lay hold on us in much the same way.
We are reluctant to break a tie with someone we enjoy being around, even when we know for certain they bring us down.
The common thread is emotional involvement of the mind and heart. I pray we would make the same commitments David made, and remain free of the firm grasp of wickedness.
