Psalm 9:20 “Put them in fear, O LORD: that the nations may know themselves to be but men. Selah.”
This is a fascinating verse, the fear it speaks about is a reverence that takes into account who the One being feared really is – and therefore puts the one fearing in context.
Through history powerful men have either declared themselves to be, or went about as though they were, gods.
Pride has a way of elevating the opinions we have of ourselves, as we take the reins of our own future, believing we have the ability and authority to shape it.
Perhaps many of the most spiritual moments of our lives have come only after the stunning realization that we have no great power within ourselves.
It is when the terrific commonness of our manhood becomes reality that we realize we must rely only upon the Lord.
This may be a good prayer for the lost among the nations. Pray that they come to grips with their humanity and turn to Christ.
Those of us who know him understand that we are but men, and as men, we are forgetful. Let us then, come back to the scriptures, reminding ourselves again of who we are – and who He is.
