Genesis 13:12 “Abram dwelled in the land of Canaan, and Lot dwelled in the cities of the plain, and pitched his tent toward Sodom.”
Many a sermon has focused on this passage of scripture. The phrase that jumps off the page is Lot “pitched his tent toward Sodom.” This is the beginning of Lot’s great sorrow. Sodom is a picture of sin and evil. It is a wicked place, where wicked people dwell.
We learn something about Lot by the position of his tent. The very least we can say about him at this point, is that he showed an interest in this wicked place, rather than turning his back on it. More is revealed a few chapters later, as we find Lot in the heart of the city, setting in a seat prominence.
Eventually, this man is willing to sacrifice his daughters to a depraved mob. And when he warns his extended family of judgement, they consider him a joke. He loses his wife too, as she has grown to love Sodom more than obedience to God.
We cast a curious eye in the direction of wickedness at our own peril. Let this verse and lot’s life be a warning.
