Psalm 127:1 “Except the LORD build the house, they labour in vain that build it: except the LORD keep the city, the watchman waketh but in vain.”
Has focusing on circumstances in our lives ever caused us to forget this truth?
We must be careful day by day, to remember that our work is not “just as effective” as God’s.
The philosophy that leads to a usurpation of God’s position as builder and watchman says “we can handle most things on our own.” This is, of course, a ridiculous statement, that has little evidence in reality.
Still, we sometimes find ourselves instinctively believing it.
This is really a passage about total reliance upon God. It devalues our skill at life architecture and oversight, while establishing the total sufficiency of the Lord.
Any saved man is not a “self-made” man, his character, career, and family life are all products of God’s blessing.
If there comes a moment when we start believing our own efforts brought us to where we are, we should come back to this Psalm.
If we are working in our own strength, excluding God, we should prepare for eventual collapse.
