Luke 4:3-4 “And the devil said unto him, If thou be the Son of God, command this stone that it be made bread. And Jesus answered him, saying, It is written, That man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God.”
Jesus was hungry, being in the wilderness 40 days with nothing to eat. This was the obvious temptation, as the Savior was physically at His weakest point.
But His response previews the remainder of this series of temptations. For He would meet every one of them with the word of God.
When facing challenge, He responded with truth. His example should inspire us.
We must lean on truth daily – for trials and temptations will come daily. They will threaten to weigh us down and knock us off course.
Reliance upon the flesh may be our first reaction, but the temptation will come when we are weak. Perhaps not 40-days-of-fasting-weak, but tired or hungry or discouraged-weak. And we will need something far beyond our flesh.
We cannot live by bread alone and we cannot face challenges, save with the word of God and the Spirit of God alone.
