John 7:37-38 “In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink. He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.”
The very next verse explains that Jesus was speaking of the Holy Spirit, “which they that believe on him should receive.”
He describes a concept from the Old Testament, but doesn’t give a direct quote.
This concept is seen in, among other places, Isaiah 44, when God promises to “pour water upon him that is thirsty.” And to pour out “floods upon the dry ground.”
God told Israel He would pour His “spirit upon their seed,” and His “blessing upon their offspring.”
The picture of God’s providing water in dryness and heat is a common one. It helps us to understand the effect of salvation.
All that are thirsty must come to Him. He not only quenches thirst, but provides an unlimited supply of water.
