John 8:31-32 “Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”
Those who are saved by turning from their sin to Christ alone – keep believing. We make a commitment. We listen to what He says, continue rejecting our own will and obey His will.
None of His disciples do so perfectly – far from it. But the Holy Spirit in us chastens and convicts. And God’s plan is for us to be accountable to other believers in His local church. They are a source of help, exhortation, and strengthening in the truth.
We are changed by His truth. Instead of remaining slaves to sin, we have means to obtain victory. But only through Him.
As Jesus goes on to explain in the next few verses, He makes us free. And when He does, we are truly free.
His disciples live in freedom because we know Him – and because we believe and obey what He says.
