Acts 8:35 “Then Philip opened his mouth, and began at the same scripture, and preached unto him Jesus.”
Saint somebody or other was once quoted as saying a person should preach the gospel always and if necessary use words. This statement is often repeated by well-meaning Bible teachers, but I’m convinced it is totally wrong. Preaching, by its very definition, requires words. The reality of this is emphasized when we read the phrase “Philip opened his mouth.”
Some of us never get this far. We may tell ourselves that if we just live a Godly lifestyle, it will be good enough. No doubt holy living is required, but it is not the only thing required; we must also open our mouths.
It would be a good idea to start just where Philip did. Read the word of God and focus on Jesus Christ. There is no more successful strategy for winning the lost and making disciples. We may not come across many who are reading scripture and wondering what it means, but God will provide opportunities. Keep an eye out for them and take every one He offers. Consider them divine appointments and speak!
