Luke 23:42-43 “And he said unto Jesus, Lord, remember me when thou comest into thy kingdom. And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, To day shalt thou be with me in paradise.”
This thief, hanging on a cross next to Jesus, understood that he was justly dying for his own sins, while Jesus had done nothing amiss.
Rather than using his final moments, like the thief on the other side of Jesus, to lash out and scorn, he made this plea, calling on the mercy of the Savior.
When he asked the other thief “dost not thou fear God” it was clear that he did – and was willing to stake His eternity on Jesus being the Messiah.
This is a wonderful request, just “remember me.” The simplicity of it shows a surrender and humility that informs us about the nature of faith.
Jesus was, even at that moment, suffering in our place. The sin of that man – and every man – was upon Him.
He alone could offer the free gift of salvation and promise paradies. The offer still stands. We must receive Him by faith.
