John 16:21 “A woman when she is in travail hath sorrow, because her hour is come: but as soon as she is delivered of the child, she remembereth no more the anguish, for joy that a man is born into the world.”
In the preceding verses, Jesus is speaking of His death, resurrection, and eventual ascension, returning to His father.
The disciples were curious. What did He mean when He said “a little while, and ye shall not see me?”
Well…He would be crucified and buried in just a short time and there would be at least three really hard days ahead for them. They would have sorrow, anguish, and ask themselves many hard questions.
But those days of difficulty would be instantly forgotten when He rose from the dead and appeared before them.
Anguish would be replaced by rejoicing, knowing their salvation was secure!
While Jesus would return to His father, leaving them (and us) in trust with the gospel – and they would face many persecutions for Him – their travail would be forgotten for the joy of knowing and serving Him.
