Proverbs 29:2 “When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice: but when the wicked beareth rule, the people mourn.”
Make careful note of the type of people this passage references.
It’s not talking about people who agree or disagree with our position on the issues.
They are righteous, which are just people, who do right. And wicked, which are morally wrong people, the ungodly.
The words for “in authority” and “beareth rule” are a little different too.
When it’s referencing the righteous, it could mean increased – or in the majority. But it could also mean increased in dignity and power.
The wicked people, it says, have dominion – they reign.
The verse could be restated this way: when just people are increased in society, people rejoice, but when the wicked reign, the people mourn.
Culture, and public sentiment on that culture, change dramatically based on the character of the people.
Nations need more genuinely righteous people, raising to positions of authority, so that they may avoid the reign of wickedness.
Believers in Christ must reflect His glory, for He transforms wicked men, giving them His righteousness.
