Matthew 9:11-12 “And when the Pharisees saw it, they said unto his disciples, Why eateth your Master with publicans and sinners? But when Jesus heard that, he said unto them, They that be whole need not a physician, but they that are sick.”
Jesus had just called the tax collector, Matthew, to follow Him. Now, he sat at Matthew’s house with other sinners.
The Pharisees that had a problem with this were lacking perspective. Pride has a tendency to blind the eyes in this way.
When Jesus says those who are sick need a physician, He doesn’t mean to say that the Pharisees are healthy. They are sick with sin, just as much as the people at Matthew’s table.
But the Pharisee’s perceive themselves as whole. And until they see the reality of their sin, they cannot see the need for a Great Physician.
Jesus came to save sinners – those labeled sinners by society for obvious wrongdoing, and those who maintain a pious exterior.
All are sick with sin. Who will come to Him in their great need and fall upon His mercy?
