Mark 2:17 “When Jesus heard it, he saith unto them, They that are whole have no need of the physician, but they that are sick: I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.”
The scribes and Pharisees have just seen Jesus eating with tax collectors and other sinners.
They were critical of this and they wanted to know why He was doing it.
This is the answer Jesus provides. Only people who are sick need a physician.
He did not mean to say that the scribes and Pharisees were whole. They were just as much sinners as the crooked tax collectors and others Jesus ministered to, but they had the arrogance to believe they were just fine.
These critics were not righteous, they were self-righteous, and Jesus turned His attention to those who were disdained and disliked by the religious world.
None of us come to Jesus with righteousness of our own. We are all sinners; all in need of a physician. But we have to come for Him for help, not reject Him, believing we are acceptable on our own.
He is able to completely heal. To make everything that is wrong, right. And to make this true for eternity.
