John 6:9 “There is a lad here, which hath five barley loaves, and two small fishes: but what are they among so many?”
This striking question falls within the account of Jesus’ miraculous feeding of five thousand.
Philip has just told him that providing bread for such a crowd would be too expensive. The disciples simply weren’t equipped to provide for their needs.
It hardly seemed worth mentioning, but one lad did have a little food.
What were five barley loaves and two small fishes among so many?
The answer, of course, is just enough – for Jesus.
He could have done it with no food at all. But it’s easy for those of us reading the story now to say that.
I wonder how strong our faith would have been in that moment?
I wonder how strong our faith is when the resources we have seem insufficient?
The Savior can make plenty where there is not enough. When we can’t fill one basket with what we have, He leaves us with twelve baskets of scraps
Our job is to remember His power, to rely upon His sufficiency, and to call upon Him when solutions seem out of reach.
