Colossians 3:22-23 “Servants, obey in all things your masters according to the flesh; not with eyeservice, as menpleasers; but in singleness of heart, fearing God: And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men;”
In the context of a master and servant relationship, a believer in Christ must display a faithfulness and commitment to the Lord. Losing sight of this duty puts us in danger of doing just enough to appear diligent, or just enough to be well spoken of. It’s really more about how we relate to God than how we relate to others.
Masters on earth are worthy of respect, of course, and deserve our best effort, but we serve a higher Master. Our single focus must be His will; with hard work, attention to detail, and complete honesty.
When we are under authority and have a job to do, let us not focus merely on our responsibility to people and tasks. To fear the Lord is to recognize who He is, acknowledging by our effort, that all authority comes from Him.
