Job 38:4-5 “Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth? declare, if thou hast understanding. Who hath laid the measures thereof, if thou knowest? or who hath stretched the line upon it?”
Job hears directly from God in these closing chapters. But not in the way he may have been expecting.
The Lord speaks in a whirlwind (a storm) and begins with some big questions.
These are questions which immediately expose reality and put Job in his place.
God laid the foundations of the earth long before Job ever came along. And he determined their every dimension with His own measuring stick.
Job has no understanding on these matters. No man does, really.
In fact, if all the brilliant men in all of the world were assembled in one place, they would fail in every way to explain them.
He is far above us. Great in wisdom and power and majesty. And there is none like Him.
When we choose to contend with God, we raise ourselves to a level, in our own minds, that is altogether false. Men were made by God from the dust.
