Luke 12:4-5 “And I say unto you my friends, Be not afraid of them that kill the body, and after that have no more that they can do. But I will forewarn you whom ye shall fear: Fear him, which after he hath killed hath power to cast into hell; yea, I say unto you, Fear him.”
The fear of man and the fear of God are set against one another often in scripture. Jesus puts them into perspective here.
When threatened by man, that which can be done to the flesh is heavy on our minds. We want to avoid pain and certainly avoid death. Therefore these can become our primary concerns.
The Savior urges us to step back and see the bigger picture. He expects us to be mindful of the One who is over all and has eternity in His hands.
God can hold back the harmful hand of man, but often (for His own purposes) does not. In either case, He can be trusted.
It is up to us to see reality, keep the perspective Jesus outlines, and fear rightly.
