John 19:1-3 “Then Pilate therefore took Jesus, and scourged him. And the soldiers platted a crown of thorns, and put it on his head, and they put on him a purple robe, And said, Hail, King of the Jews! and they smote him with their hands.”
This is just the beginning of the pain and indignity Jesus will face in this chapter.
The sinless Savior has placed Himself, willingly, into the hands of men who will punish Him, as though He were a criminal.
While even Pilate himself finds “no fault in him,” He endures the penalty without a word of defense or resistance.
Motivated by love, the Father has given Jesus (His only begotten son) for this purpose. He will lay the sins of the world upon Him.
Those sins are worthy of punishment – worthy of death.
We, the sinners, should have received these blows, but He took them in our place. He was our substitute.
We who know Him are eternally grateful.
