Luke 18:22-23 “Now when Jesus heard these things, he said unto him, Yet lackest thou one thing: sell all that thou hast, and distribute unto the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, follow me. And when he heard this, he was very sorrowful: for he was very rich.”
Download He was very sorrowful
Jesus was speaking to a ruler that said he had been keeping God’s commandments from his youth up.
He asked the question “what shall I do to inherit eternal life?”
This part of the Savior’s response was difficult. He asked him to give up treasure on earth, in favor of treasure in heaven.
Rather than expressing faith in Christ and a commitment to following Him, he was sorrowful.
Convinced of his own righteousness, through commandment-keeping and unwilling to let go of earthly wealth, he walked away.
We know his righteousness was an illusion, for all have sinned. He should have embraced the Savior – for what can a man give in exchange for his soul?
