John 18:20-21 “Jesus answered him, I spake openly to the world; I ever taught in the synagogue, and in the temple, whither the Jews always resort; and in secret have I said nothing. Why askest thou me? ask them which heard me, what I have said unto them: behold, they know what I said.”
Jesus is responding to a question from the high priest about His disciples and His doctrine.
A nearby officer would strike Jesus upon hearing this answer.
There was nothing secret about His ministry. In fact, it was the things He said and did in public that angered the chief priests and Pharisees.
They rejected the truth.
Far from any hidden agenda, His message was meant to be spread to all men. To Jew and to Gentile – to the ends of the earth.
Unfortunately, men love darkness rather than light – and everyone who does evil hates the light.
This hatred and rejection would crucify Him, incomprehensibly providing a means of salvation, even for those doing the hating and rejecting.
What a gracious Savior!
