James 4:15 “For that ye ought to say, If the Lord will, we shall live, and do this, or that.”
There is a phrase that may often be heard after every statement of intent by a righteous person. That phrase? “Lord willing.”
We may begin to wonder if the habit of saying something like this is necessary; that is until we review this passage.
Perhaps merely this statement could serve as a reminder of who God is and what He controls.
Our typical thoughts are on what we “will” do and when “will” do it.
This, however, assumes (at least in rhetorical terms) that we are the authors of own destiny.
Those of us who believe in Christ know this is cannot be the case. Our hope and reliance upon Him reveal that to us every day.
Do we speak as though this is the case? Do we plan and live and take action as though this is the case?
Sometimes it could be a question of bringing our words in line with the reality of the situation, thus reminding ourselves (and anyone who hears) that we are at the mercy of God’s sovereign will.
