Acts 6:2 “Then the twelve called the multitude of the disciples unto them, and said, It is not reason that we should leave the word of God, and serve tables.”

Any deacon worth his salt can find his chief responsibility in this verse. Sadly, many would set their sights on a more glamorous job description than simply serving tables.

The seven men selected did not act as a governing board or group of Apostle-supervisors. They helped minister to the daily needs of the widows. This is the role of a church servant, enlisted to bear burdens. Relieving these burdens helps the church, but also provides time for pastors to focus on studying and teaching the word of God.

Remember, the servant identity is one Jesus took on himself. The righteous among us are always needed to take on menial responsibilities, because the worldly will (no doubt) avoid them.

Does a deacon hold high office in the church? Most certainly; but only because he is willing to stoop low enough to obtain it. Let’s have the right perspective on deacons by examining the facts of this chapter. They serve an important, but sometimes misunderstood purpose.
