John 13:34-35 “A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.”
The new part of the commandment seems to be, not that we love one another, but that we love one another as He loved.
He is our example. And an extraordinary example at that!
He is, at this moment in the text, looking forward to the cross. Where He will bear our sins in His own body.
He will stand, the sinless Son of God, falsely accused, receiving the punishment we should have received.
The Bible tells us He does so because He loves us. And says there is no greater love than this, “that a man lay down his life for his friends.”
This is the kind of love we should have – His kind of love.
When we have it, we resemble Him. And this is a unique kind of love the world will recognize.
“We have His love” they will say. “We must be His disciples.”
