Rest is needed at this point in the narrative, for the land, the combatants, and for the reader.
Israel has been through a sustained period of battle in chapters 8 through 11 and while consistent victories marked their path, the people are no doubt relieved it is over.
God’s promise is kept, Joshua and the people have obeyed, and the land is now in their possession.
This was a successful mission, in which God fought for Israel, but that doesn’t mean it was easy.
Let us never be confused about the difficulty of God’s journey for us, even if He has promised victory.
Diligent work is often required. Hard choices must be made. We grow weary and need rest.
Thankfully God grants that rest.
He is a God that requires hard work and total commitment. But He is also a God that provides for our needs at every turn.
Sometimes that rest even comes in a land flowing with milk and honey!
