Isaiah 7:14 “Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.”
God’s intervention in the course of human history – to provide a Savior – is foretold here. This would be a miraculous sign. Not just that a virgin would bring forth a child, but that His name would be called “God with us.”
Whatever difficult things were ahead for Israel, some of which were predicted in this book, the nation could face them with hope of deliverance. This is a son that could secure redemption for all. God in human flesh, who would be the stand-in sacrifice for sinners, dying and then raising to life again.
The name Immanuel is one Jew and Gentile alike would sing and celebrate for all time. It means the joy of sins forgiven, the hope of life eternal, and the fulfillment of the promises of God.
Israel looked forward to this son. We look back. Those with knowledge of Him in any age rejoice. He is God’s gift of grace to mankind. The Savior of the world!
