II Peter 2:1 “But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction.”
Do we keep our eyes and ears open for false teachers? It may be that we have one of two tendencies. Either we are too quick to trust those who claim the name of Christ, or we are too suspicious of those not exactly like us.
These problems represent two different sides of the same coin. In both cases they are a result of trying to do things the easy way.
It is never easy be discerning. We have to watch and listen closely, knowing what the Bible says and applying it rightly. This means walking closely with Christ and looking to Him for guidance.
If we know the real thing and deal with people honestly, we will have no trouble spotting a phony.
It says here that false teachers will be among us. It is our job to know the truth – and stand for it.
