I Timothy 1:15 “This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief.”
This statement about Jesus should be accepted without question, He had a mission in the world – to save sinners.
Jesus is worthy of praise for loving us enough to come, willingly dying the death we deserved. And He is worthy of our eternal thanksgiving for offering the free gift of salvation, by His grace.
The Apostle Paul reminds himself (and us) of this truth, as he reflects on how little he deserved it.
Perhaps he calls himself chief among sinners recalling his violent persecution of the church. Or perhaps he is thinking of his daily battle, even as a disciple, constantly desiring obedience, but often finding himself disobedient.
Whatever the case, we can identify. We know just how needy we are. This is why grace is a favor unmerited.
Verses like this and others should draw us together as believers in Christ. Not simply in remembering our need, but in repeating Jesus’ success in meeting it, providing us with eternal salvation.
