James 4:1 “From whence come wars and fightings among you? come they not hence, even of your lusts that war in your members?”
The questions contained in this verse are important.
The sad reality is, if we ask ourselves why we war and fight with our spouse or Christian brother, we are not likely answer correctly.
We may prefer to make excuses or come up with justifications for our quarrels, even though they are the simple result of our own lusts.
The verse doesn’t read (the more generic and universal) “our” lusts; they are more specifically “your” lusts.
This is pointed, quite directly, at the person reading. Let us not shift the blame to the other party in any dispute, because it is not their lusts that are the problem.
The finger is pointing at us and the desires of our flesh that we often allow to dictate our behaviors.
We cannot expect another to address their portion of the blame until we have addressed our own.
We should ask ourselves the questions in this verse, then have the courage to give the correct answers.
Our hope for healthy relationships at home, outside the home, or in the church is recognition of truth.
