This was Jesus’ answer to the question “which is the great commandment in the law?”

He tells this lawyer to love God, but explains, he should love Him with everything he is.

Jesus quotes from Deuteronomy 6:4-5, which would have been a familiar passage for the Pharisees He spoke with.

This was a long-standing command to God’s people.

His people are to love Him with the mind, will, and emotions. In the very deepest, immaterial parts of ourselves. And with all of our intelligence and understanding.

When the whole person is engaged in loving Him, there is a commitment, a devotion, and a surrender that is also present.

We love Him because we know, based on the Bible, who He is. And embracing that reality changes us.

In fact, it makes the second great command possible, which you’ll find as you read on.

Matthew 22:37-38 “Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment.”
