The Pharisees were trying to entangle Jesus in His talk. He perceived their wickedness and called them hypocrites.
Their dishonest question at least resulted in some helpful information for us.
This has become a useful passage when talking about our responsibility to earthly authorities.
God has ordained all authority in the world. And while those authorities can do a lot of things wrong, we are not relieved of our responsibility to follow their laws.
With a limited number of specific exceptions, they have a right to tell us what to do.
God put them in place. They put the coins into circulation. And we should give back exactly the number of coins they request, when they request them.
This is not about allegiance to man. This is more about obedience to God.
