Through much tribulation

Acts 14:21-22 “And when they had preached the gospel to that city, and had taught many, they returned again to Lystra, and to Iconium, and Antioch, Confirming the souls of the disciples, and exhorting them to continue in the faith, and that we must through much tribulation enter into the kingdom of God.”

The previous few verses tell the story of Paul being stoned and left for dead.

Now we see him reminding the disciples that we “through much tribulation” will enter into the kingdom of God.

Hearing about tribulation from Paul must have brought added credibility and seriousness. Those who would continue in the faith at that time (and often in our time) would face real and extremely difficult persecution.

Paul was speaking with profound understanding of the subject and these believers must have been encouraged.

He tells them to press forward in a way that he is already pressing forward, preaching the word, but also living by it. And willing to pay the price, whatever that may have been.
